Life Cycles--Summary
Life takes many forms, but all of them follow a cycle.
Tadpoles use gills to breathe in water; they grow legs, and their tails shrink and disappear. Some kinds of frogs mature in a matter of weeks.
Calves take about 22 months to grow inside the wombs. An elephant calf drinks milk until it's five to ten. Once it starts to eat plants, it is in adolescence. African elephants become adults at about age 17.
Humans grow inside their mothers for nine months. After a year, most babies can walk and talk. Childhood usually lasts for about 11 years. Human adolescence begins at about age 12, their bodies produce more hormones. People's bodies may be full-grown by age 18 to 24. The human's brains develop until age 30. The average human life cycle lasts almost 80 years, but now it becomes 100 or more.
Most insects go through egg, larva, pupa, and adult. But some other kinds of them are somewhat different.
Young giant sequoias start producing cones at about age 20. A mature giant sequoia may produce more than 300,000 seeds a year. Giant sequoias are the longest-living life-forms on Earth. Their life cycles may last more than 3,000 years.
Not all plants sprout from seeds. Aspens send up shoots from their roots that grow into new trees.
All living things complete their life cycle when they die. In nature, when a living thing dies, it releases nutrients and chemicals that other organisms use to live, grow and reproduce.
